First title of the season goes to Boys team

This season's first title goes to Grove's Junior boys team who have won the section E league. It is great credit to the youngsters, as last year they really struggled, but they have persevered and come out this year's champions.

The title is all the more satisfying as it is the first fruits of the coaching programme set up last season by club coach Ifty Patel. It is hoped that the programme will continue to develop young players and help those with "rusty rackets" to return to the game and once more enjoy both the health and social benefits to be gained from club membership.

Credit must also be given to Fash Safdari who has done all the background work for the team that often goes unseen but is always essential. Fash, whose son Tom is a member of the team, is obviously very excited by the win, but is generous in his credit to the members of the team ,under the captaincy of Pedro Ballester. The boys finished the season having won 5, drawn 2 and losing just 1 game.

When the members of the team return from holiday we will publish a photo of them on the Blog.
They will receive their trophy at the Huddersfield & District Tennis League AGM to be held on Monday 12th September at Longley Tennis Club at 7.30 pm.

Well done to all involved and hoping their performance will be matched by the men's team, who are currently riding high in Division 4 of the senior league.

Next season it is planned to enter a second team in the league, but we need a few more men players. Anyone interested please post a comment on this site and we will be in touch

President's Day Celebration at Grove

The inclement weather on Sunday, 17th July was not sufficient to cause the Club's President day to be abandoned. Twelve players dodged the showers to complete an American Mixed Doubles Tournament with 6 couples participating. The players played four games with their partner then four games against the partner.

It proved a great opportunity for people, especially new members, to get to know one another and it even persuaded the father of a junior member to pick up his racket and join in, the first time he had played since leaving school!

The afternoon was completed with a "Faith Tea" and accompanying strawberries and ice cream.

For President Adrian Abel, it was a double celebration. The day before his daughter Catherine and her partner David presented him with his first grand child, Abigail Elizabeth, so all toasted their health with a glass of bubbly.

The next social event will be a Barbecue on 10th September, but meanwhile new members are always welcome, Wednesday evening being a good time as it is club night.

New season, new faces, new decor

The new season has got off to a good start. The newly promoted Ladies A Team are now in the Division 1 of the Slazenger Huddersfield & District Tennis League, while the B team is playing in Division 3. The men's team is doing really well in Division 4, where they are at top of the table, having lost just one match and drawn one. The boys' team are finding life in Section E difficult but it is giving the youngsters great experience.

The dry weather at the beginning of the season made getting the shale courts ready difficult, but members'hard work paid off and the courts are now playing better than ever, thanks to all who gave of their time to maintain what we believe are the best shale courts for miles around. Shale courts are becoming rare, but having played on them you will see why they are favoured by many seasoned players, and are less aggressive to our joints and muscles than harder surfaces. A special thanks to all who generously gave of their time

The club house is looking bright and welcoming after repainting, using paint donated by PPG Architectural Coatings UK and with new carpet tiles donated by Interface FLOR. Why not come down to President's Day (17th July 2011) to see the new look.

The Open Day was very successful, with many new members joining up and youngsters joining our coaching scheme, which is partly funded by Sport England's £7,000 award.

Wednesday Club night has proved popular again, and for the last few Wednesday evenings all three courts have been fully used. Ifty Patel is continuing as the club coach and organises several sessions for youngsters and adults alike. He can be contacted on 07961961443 or email: iftypatel@hotmail.com

Grove is a great place to learn tennis or to return to the sport after a lengthy lay-off. It is friendly and welcoming and maintains standards of courtesy and sportsmanship. For more information contact Adrian (mobile - 077186579114 or email

Welcome

Welcome to Grove Lawn Tennis Club blog.

This blog has been developed to support the survival of what is probably Huddersfield's oldest tennis club having records going back well over 100 years.

Grove is in a good financial situation but requires more support in the running and maintenance of the club. The club has found a new secretary, treasurer and trustees.

Grove has some of the best courts in Huddersfield – beautiful shale courts due to the hard work of Fred Dransfield and a willing band of around a dozen members.

There are currently around 40 members at the club and the club welcomes players of all ages and levels.

Membership at Grove Lawn is £85 a year and use of the courts is unlimited outside of match times Anyone interested in joining the club as a member should contact Mrs M Ardley on 01484 682124.
